Gallo MateseRu Uàllë
A sheer limestone cliff dropping into a green Apennine gorge in late light

Town

Vallelunga and the red rock

Ten kilometres from the hill town, a cliff with two names — Masso Rosso, Piescurusc — and a gorge that does not care who you are.

5 min read

Vallelunga is the frazione that makes Gallo feel larger than its hill. The road out is a reminder that this comune is a valley, not a postcard square. At the far end the rock drops — Masso Rosso on the maps, Piescurusc in the mouth of people who did not need maps.

There is a presumed Roman trace in this country, a cut in the stone from the Volturno plain over Pesco Rosso and the Fosso dei Maragoni. Presumed is the honest word. What you can stand on is the cliff, the beech, the air that thins enough to make a city person quiet.

Go with someone who knows the edge. The gorge is not a viewpoint with a rail. It is the mountain being itself. Bring water. Do not leave a name carved in the limestone. The rock has outlived every surname in the valley and will outlive the ones we have not thought of yet.
